A young couple was injured late Tuesday morning after their vehicle collided into the side of a tractor trailer along SR309 near Tamaqua Truck and Trailer Company in West Penn Township.
The incident occurred after a tractor trailer, driven by James Ward III of Michigan, pulled out from an unnamed dirt road onto the northbound side and drove straight across SR309 towards the Tamaqua Coal Pockets.
The truck was impacted by a southbound KIA Spectra driven by Ryan Genery, 24, Barnesville, which drove part way under the passenger side of the trailer. Genery's wife, Shonna, 21, was also in the car.
The couple were taken via ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital - Miner's Campus in Coaldale. Shonna was then transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, for head injuries.
The driver of the tractor didn't suffer any injuries and very little damage was done to the trailer. The KIA was totaled and had to be towed from the scene.
Responding were West Penn, Tamaqua and Coaldale police, West Penn Fire Company, Penn Mahoning ambulance, Lehighton ambulance and West Penn Fire Police. Officer Melissa Boyer is investigating.
