A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following a two vehicle crash that occurred about 6:43 p.m. on Friday, March 2, along SR924, a mile north of the village of Sheppton, in East Union Township.

State police at Frackville said Michael Kelchner, 28, of Fern Glen, was driving a 2000 Pontiac northbound when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed the center line and collided into a 2007 Chevrolet operated by William Michael, 58, of Sheppton. Troopers said the road was shut down for about two hours.

Kelchner and his passenger, Bree Cote, 38, of Harveys Lake, had to be extricated from the vehicle. Kelchner, Cote and Michael were all transported to the Hazleton General Hospital for treatment of injuries. Kelchner and Cote were not wearing seat belts, troopers said.

Damages were termed major to both vehicles. Troopers said a DUI charge against Kelchner is pending blood test results. He was charged with driving on roadways laned for traffic and careless driving.
