Celebrating literacy

The students at Penn Kidder Elementary School were all thrilled by visits this week from three area sports mascots as a part of their celebration of BAMMM week.

BAMMM stands for "Books are Magical, Magnificent, and Marvelous," a theme that was followed all week at the school.The students were delighted by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' mascot "Tux," the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees baseball team's mascot "Champ," and Jim Thorpe Area High School's own mascot, "Herc."Also visiting with the students during Monday's BAMM activities were seven JTAHS school athletes who spoke about the importance of reading and earning good grades.Monday's BAMM week theme was "Sports Day;" while Tuesday's theme was "Go Green;" and Wednesday's theme was "Beach Day."Finishing off the week today was "Crazy Sock Day" and the celebration of the birthday of popular author Dr. Seuss, who is widely known for his children's books.Also visiting the school for Dr. Seuss's birthday was the Cat in the Hat and the characters Thing One and Thing Two.The BAMMM week activities, which stress the importance of reading, were coordinated by Penn Kidder reading specialist Kathy Andreas.
