He continues to cement his reputation as a submission specialist.
All the while, the list of wins and titles Professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter Joel Roberts amasses continues to grow.
James Cianci was the latest casualty to fall victim to Roberts' submission prowess when the two squared off on May 19 at Cage Fight 12 in Dickson City for the PA 135lbs Pro MMA title.
Roberts, of Lehighton, applied a rear naked choke at four minutes of the first round on Cianci, the protégé and training partner of Ultimate Fighting Championships fighter Jimi Hettes, to win the Bantamweight Championship.
The win marked the fifth straight for Roberts, all by submission. Overall, he sports a pro record of 8-3.
"It was a great achievement," Roberts said. "It was the first fight I didn't have injuries."
With the win, Roberts now holds both the 135 and 145 lb. PA Cage Fighting titles.
"It was easier than I anticipated," said Roberts of the fight. "I thought it would be much harder."
As he looks ahead, Roberts said his next goal is to fight with Bellator Fighting Championships, the second biggest promotion in the world, and eventually the UFC.
Roberts fought in Bellator last October, when he beat a highly-touted and favored Brylan VanArtsdalen via triangle choke in the second round.
In the meantime, Roberts continues to train full time at Rat Pack Fighting Systems in Palmerton, where he is the head MMA instructor and part owner.
Roberts earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu earlier this year, and is also captain of the Rat Pack fight team.
