Speed may have been a factor in a fatal crash involving a Schuylkill County motorcyclist.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the victim as Ronald Robert McKay III, 23, of Schuylkill Haven. The crash occurred sometime between 12:30 and 1 a.m. on Monday along SR61 in in front of the Seltzer Insurance property in North Manheim Township.

Troopers said McKay was operating a 2005 Honda cycle southbound at a high rate of speed when the bike left the road and traveled onto the berm. The bike traveled about 20 feet in the grass prior to impacting with a metal sign post with the handlebars.

The impact caused the bike to turn sideways and begin overturning while continuing to travel south through the grass. About 160 feet after impacting with the sign post, both McKay and the bike impacted with a rock.

After impacting with the rock, McKay was thrown from the bike and traveled 26 feet prior to striking a tree. The bike impacted with the tree about eight feet from ground level and 33 feet after impacting with the rock.

After impacting with the tree the bike continued 56 feet south through trees and brush before coming to rest.

McKay was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Joseph Pothering. Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the Orwigsburg Fire Company and ambulances from Orwigsburg and Pottsville.

Trooper Eric Reber is the investigating officer.
