Schuylkill man jailed for assault
A Schuylkill County man was jailed on Wednesday for assault and related counts.
State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the suspect as John Steven Petrovich, 42, of the village of Pitman, Eldred Township. The incident occurred between 5:30 and 6:45 p.m. at 15 Ridge Rd., Apt. 2, in the township.
Troopers gave the following account of what happened.
Petrovich became involved in a verbal dispute with a 32-year-old female, not identified by troopers, at the residence over Petrovich driving the female's car.
The dispute escalated and Petrovich allegedly pushed, choked and pulled the hair of the female knocking her to the ground. He also pulled a large tuft of hair from the female from the back of her head in the process, troopers said.
During the altercation Petrovich threw a large wooden chair in the direction of the female and also a 13-year-old female and a four-year-old male, who were present in the apartment.
The chair struck the two juveniles. The female juvenile was struck on the right wrist which caused her to suffer pain and swelling. The juvenile boy was struck in the head, which caused a raised contusion on his foreheard.
Petrovich fled the scene prior to the arrival of troopers. He was located a short time later in a local tavern and taken into custody.
He was charged with simple assault, reckessly endangering another person, and harassment. He was arraigned by District Judge Carol Pankake, of Tremont. Bail was set at $15,000, 10 percent. Petrovich was unable to post bail and was committed to the county prison in Pottsville.
