Carbon vehicle stop leads to jail

Published June 08. 2012 05:01PM

A Michigan man was jailed following a vehicle stop in Carbon County. State police at Fern Ridge said the incident occurred about 11:57 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.

Troopers said a Hertz rental vehicle bearing Michigan registration was stopped for speeding.

A consent search was made of the vehicle and K9 Johnny was used. He alerted troopers to luggage in the trunk.

A suitcase found contained $5,400, personal bank statements, recent wire transactions of large amounts of money, India currency, and personal documents such as marriage license, passports and recent sale of property.

All the items found were the property of the passenger, identified as Rajeshkumar B. Tiwari, 39, of Jackson, Mich.

Troopers said a check was made and it was learned that Tiwari had recent sexual assault arrests in Michigan and was currently out on bond. Troopers said the items found were indicators that led authorities to believe that Tiwari could possibly be fleeing the country.

A call was made to Michigan officials, who then indicated they would obtain a felony bench warrant for Tiwari's arrest.

A fugitive from justice warrant was obtained and Tiwari was taken into custody.

He was arraigned before District Judge Casmir Kosciolek, of Lansford. He was committed to the county prison in Nesquehoning in lieu of $1 million cash bail.

Michigan intends to extradite Tiwari, troopers added.
