250th Chestnuthill anniversary book is under way

Published June 08. 2012 05:02PM

Norman Burger, president of the Polk Township Historical Society, said Chestnuthill is working on the 250th anniversary. Chestnuthill includes Eldred, Ross and Polk townships because they were broken off from Chestnuthill. A letterhead was approved at the last anniversary meeting. It contains the logos from the four townships.

"We talked about a variety of projects for the book," he said at the June 4 Polk meeting.

A list presented has 29 items that could be covered. He also brought the beginnings and some completed stories on a number of subjects.

An 1886 book about Monroe, Wayne and Pike counties by Albert Matthews was found in the library.

Some subjects are the Lenape, Moravian missions, colonial forts, churches, schools, a gunsmith, the Chestnut Ridge Railroad, the West End Fair, social and civic organizations, the wintergreen industry, brickyards and property records.

He hopes the Women of Ross have some information since that township does not have a formal historical society.

The first recorded census was from 1790 and had 709 people living in the West End.

Further suggestions, historical articles and photographs are needed.

Burger was thanked for all the work he put into the project.

He hopes to have the book to the publisher by May 2013. It will not have advertisements but there will be a donor page.

Work at the Lodge Hall is needed. A window was broken apparently by a pellet gun and two display cases need glass replaced. Plexiglas will be used because it has some give rather than breaking readily. It is also time to get the dehumidifier running for the season.

The next anniversary meeting will be held the third Thursday, June 21, 7 p.m., at the Chestnuthill Municipal Building. There will be no Polk Historical meeting in July and the annual picnic will be held Aug. 6, 5:30 p.m. at the park on Route 534.
