Sgt. Clifford J. Knappenberger of Mauch Chunk has been recommended for the Soldier's Medal for heroic conduct not involving conflict with the enemy. On the afternoon of June 15, 1945, at Linz, Austria, Sgt. Knappenberger exhibited exemplary courage and heroism by saving a young girl from drowning. The girl was swimming in a harbor about 100 yards from his guard post. He dove into the water fully dressed with heavy boots to rescue her. On reaching shore, it was necessary for the soldier to apply artificial respiration and the girl was successfully revived.
