Vehicle and bear collide on I-81

Published July 30. 2012 05:03PM

A vehicle and a bear collided along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. State police at Frackville said the incident occurred about 10:55 p.m. on Friday, July 27, in Butler Township.

Troopers said Gerald Brokenshire, of Shenandoah, was operating a 2004 Subaru Forester northbound in the left lane when a large black bear was crossing the road from west to east. Brokenshire was unable to avoid striking the bear and hit it with the front end.

Brokenshire was able to come to a stop along the east berm and the bear came to rest in a grassy area. A deputy wildlife officer was called to the scene to remove the bear. Damages were moderate to the vehicle.
