On Friday night in Tamaqua, Ryan's Oil & Heating ended R.R. Frey Services' three-year reign as champions in the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission (ESRC) summer basketball league.

In a game that started outside at the North & Middle Ward Playground and finished inside at the Salvation Army Community Center (due to inclement weather), Ryan's Oil & Heating claimed its first summer league crown since 2008 (when they were known as Service Electric) with a 75-63 victory over R.R. Frey Services.

Ryan's (9-2) entered the postseason as the top overall seed (thanks to a 60-54 victory over R.R. Frey in the regular season), while second-seeded R.R. Frey finishes the year with a record of 8-3.

Ryan's jumped out to a 37-29 lead at halftime, thanks to 13 first-half points from Shawn Tray who entered off the bench. Kieran Conway also added 11 points in the first half.

Ryan's built its lead to double-digits in the second half, as R.R. Frey began to self-destruct. Joe Schaeffer shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, when R.R. Frey was called for four technical fouls after halftime (which also resulted in two ejections).

Tray ended the night with a game-high 18 points to lead Ryan's, while Schaeffer finished with 15 points including a 10-for-10 effort from the charity stripe. Conway, who afterwards was named the League M.V.P., finished with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Jon Scheuer added 12 points.

For R.R. Frey, Ray Lenhart led the way with 15 points, while Dan Miller chipped in with 13 of his own. Tom Toth collected 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
