Summit Hill church holding 78th festival this weekend

St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Summit Hill is holding its 78th annual community festival this weekend.

The festival will be held July 20 through July 22 on the grounds of the church, located at 462 W. Ludlow St. in Summit Hill. Hours of operation are 6 to 10:30 p.m., Friday; 5 to 11 p.m., Saturday (after the air-conditioned 4 p.m. Mass); and 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday, rain or shine. The festival will conclude with a fireworks display after 10 p.m. Sunday night.

The parish has been sponsoring the block party for decades. Initially called the St. Gabe's Festival as a tribute to St. Gabriel, the event brings back to the Panther Valley hundreds of family members and friends for a weekend of reunions and reminiscing.

Festival-goers can enjoy a plethora of homemade ethnic and American foods this weekend, including halupki, haluski, pierogies, soups, pizza, bleenies, turkey and beef barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, deep fried Oreos, waffles and ice cream, cakes, wings, a variety of hot sandwiches, and more.

Nightly entertainment will also be provided. On Friday, Party Dawgz will perform from 7 to 10 p.m.; YMI will perform from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday; and Asking Andy will be there from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

There will also be kiddie rides, a theme basket Chinese auction, plant sale, drawings and a horseshoe tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m. Browsing for the auction will be held until Sunday evening, and a kiddie ride special is scheduled for Friday night.

In addition, the annual St. Gabriel procession will take place on Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., Members of the festival and St. Gabriel's Club, will process with the statue of St. Gabriel through the west end of town

Parishioners and friends are invited to join in the procession, followed with the placement of the statue and benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
