Weissport Council was notified that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved Weissport's hazard mitigation plan. This offers Weissport the opportunity to apply for federal disaster assistance until the plan expires on Jan. 27, 2017.

Gene Kershner, council president, said on Monday night, that the plan addresses the planning process, risk assessment, mitigation strategy and plan maintenance requirements.

Weissport's plan received a satisfactory rating, but FEMA also encouraged Weissport to follow a schedule for regular evaluation, updating and monitoring to improve the plan.

The plan is required to prepare the town to reduce future disaster losses.

"We have a lot of vulnerable structures in this town," said Kershner.

Kershner also noted that he was planning to attend the Carbon County Tax Collection committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25 at the Jim Thorpe High School.

Weissport Council also accepted the resignation of borough worker Dennis Moser due to illness.

Council also noted that due to Moser's illness there is a vacancy on the Weissport Municipal Authority. Anyone interested should attend the next council meeting to be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 or send a letter of interest to Weissport Council.

Kershner also reported that according to a survey, there are 49 illegal dumping sites in Carbon County.

Kershner also read a letter from Carbon County Builders Association that asked council to consider sending bid list to their organization. The letter noted that CBA may be able to save the borough money by utilizing local contractors.
