Volunteers improve gazebo in Weissport Park Redneck Festival workers prepare for Labor Day event
Linda Schoenberger waits to install balusters on the new railing on the gazebo. Installing supports are Weissport Mayor Jonathan Troutman, assisted by Bob Maholick.
In an effort to improve the aesthetics of the Weissport Park and to provide support for the electric service for the Weissport Redneck Festival, the event committee recently installed PVC porch railing onto the back and sides of the park gazebo.
By building a solid structure, it eliminates the need of paying for temporary electrical service, saving the Weissport Redneck Festival a substantial cash outlay each year to equip the park with power for the event which is held Labor Day weekend in the park.
Weissport Council recently enacted a permit application ordinance to provide a way to govern the use of the park which ties into the cost of electricity use by anyone holding a public event in the park. The gazebo will be dedicated to Weissport Borough during a ceremony at this year's festival.
"We want to keep improving the park," said Duane Dellecker, chairman of the Weissport Redneck Festival Committee, an offshoot of the Weissport Recreation Committee which has worked hard to bring a playground to Weissport. "We added the railing this year and plan a dedication ceremony. We hope to continue to make improvements in Weissport with funds raised at the Weissport Redneck Festival."
The base and roof of the gazebo were built last year by Klingle Construction. PVC was chosen for the porch railing because it doesn't rust, rot or fade and doesn't require much maintenance. It also has a 25 year warranty.
Weissport Recreation Committee is a nonprofit organization that provides recreational opportunities for children in Weissport. The committee holds an annual Christmas party, Easter egg hunt and also provide incentives for children to get home early after Halloween trick or treat night.
The WRC also recently helped purchase a supply of rubber mulch for the playground.
Sponsors for the gazebo are the Weissport Recreation Committee, Weissport Redneck Festival, Palmerton Lumber, Klingle Construction, Dun-Rite Electric, Sikorsky Concrete, Jon Troutman, Zeigenfuss Coal, Buyer's First Inspection Service, Cruisin Cuisine by Christine LLC; and Mallard Market.
