Pleasant Valley School District receives gift from senior
Larua Heckelman gave the Pleasant Valley School District a gift. The recent 2012 Pleasant Valley High School graduate and valedictorian created a documentary on the 50-year history of Pleasant Valley as her graduation project and she gave it to the district. She was asked to present a portion of it to the last PVSD school board meeting.
"I couldn't be more proud to be a graduate from PV," said this Duke University-bound gal.
Heckelman recently won a scholarship from the Exchange Club and 2012 graduate Molly Smith won the A. Mitchell Palmer Award.
Dr. Douglas Arnold, PVSD superintendent said that PV raised over $1,500 for the Effort UMC Supplemental Center and the Key Club raised $1,800 for the Red Cross.
Mr. Joshua Krebs, Pleasant Valley Elementary's principal, presented the Gold Bowling Pin to the school board for raising the most money for the fundraiser of Bowl for Kids' Sake for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and they also raised the most money. It also received the pin for bowling the highest score at a Cystic Fibrosis bowling fundraiser.
Ms. Erica Walters presented each of the members of the school board a CD "of all the great things that happened at PVE this school year."
The board recognized Mr. Michael Kello, PVMS assistant principal, and his retirement after 34 years of dedication to the district. He thanked everyone and said, "Sayonara."
Mr. Daniel Corveleyn, the district's solicitor, told the board that on the behalf of Gerard Geiger and himself, it was a pleasure serving the school district for another year. "We look forward to another year with you."
The board approved, 8-0, with Harvey Frable absent the District Goals for 2012-2013. They are: To improve student performance and achievement; To provide a safe school environment for all students and staff; To improve methods for effectively communicating with our school district residents; To design and deliver a comprehensive staff development program for all classifications of personnel that ensures a cycle of continuous growth and improvement; To conduct studies that focus on current and future facilities and staff needed by the school district to improve efficiency of operation.
In other matters, the board approved the following, 8-0:
*hiring Kathleen Franklin as bookkeeper, July 2, at an annual salary of $31,449, replacing position of Patricia Kutzler
*hiring Erica Muto as substitute psychologist at per diem rate of $222.28
*hiring Melissa Gilroy as a replacement school psychology position for Paula Lahutsky
*transferring, effective new school year, Jeffrey Lazowsky, technology teacher from PVMS/PVHS to PVHS and Richard Ochs, German teacher from PVMS/PVHS to PVHS
*accepted resignation of Kathy Smith, PVMS secretary, effective June 28, 2012
*donate a modular from Pleasant Valley Elementary School to the Polk Township Vol. Fire Co. who will be responsible for removing it and all costs associated with the removal
*a contract with Step by Step Learning in the amount of $600,000 for professional services in which PV is responsible for $300,000 with a matching grant in the amount of $300,000 from the company
In business management, the board approved 8-0:
*the 2012 Homestead and Farmstead Exclusion Resolution with the maximum homestead assessment exclusion to be $3,076; maximum farmstead assessment exclusion to be $3,076; the maximum homestead tax exclusion to be $449.15; and the maximum farmstead tax exclusion to be $449.
*contract with Physio-Control Inc. at $11,982 for three years for a technical Service Support Agreement for AEDS with an increase of $1,359 over the three years
*contract with Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab for $1,500 to provide workshops at PVI
*contract with BookFLIX at $4,596/annually ($200 increase from last year
*contract with School Specialty at $2,714 for purchase of 2012-2013 student planners for PVMS
*Ohio Casualty as provider of Commercial Package and automobile insurance at a cost of $156,121
*request to advertise for sealed bids for spring athletic supplies and equipment.
