State police at Frackville reported investigating a crash along Interstate 81 in New Castle Township, Schuylkill County, about 10:11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4.

Troopers said Daniel D. Gowka, 65, of Factoryville, Wyoming County, was driving a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 truck southbound when he fell asleep at the wheel. The truck went onto the west berm and struck a mile post marker, then traveled about 360-feet in the grass along the berm.

The truck then crossed both southbound lanes while rotating counter-clockwise before striking a rock embankment in the median, head-on. After impact the truck rolled over onto its roof and came to rest blocking the southbound lanes.

Gowka was injured and taken by a medical helicopter to the Community Medical Center, Scranton, for treatment of leg and head injuries, troopers added.

Troopers said Gowka will be cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
