Hazleton man drowns at Beltzville

A Luzerne County man drowned at Beltzville State Park last night.

Carbon County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik identified the victim as Juan Rosa, 20, of Hazleton.

According to Nalesnik the incident occurred in the Wildcreek area that joins the lake and is not part of the lake. He said Rosa was with three other individuals from the Hazleton area when they notice him missing.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the area about 6:15 p.m. along with state police at Lehighton and park rangers.

According to Franklin Township Police Officer Jason Doll, Rosa was found shortly before 9 p.m. by divers in about 15 feet of water, an estimated 30 feet off shore.

Nalesnik said an autopsy was scheduled for this morning to determine the exact cause and manner of death. The park is located in Franklin and Towamensing townships.

Doll said the area where Rosa drowned is a non-swimming area. He said although swimming is prohibited, there have been rope swings and other swimming aids placed there by individuals who ignore the rule.

The ropes are frequently taken down and then replaced.

Doll said he was told Rosa had walked into the water, disappeared, and his friends and family members initially had thought he went into the woods.

Responding was the dive team of the Lehighton Fire Department as well as the Franklin Township and Towamensing Township Fire Departments.
