Fire destroys Mahoning home
LARRY NEFF/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Flames engulf the mobile home of Keith and Petra Rex, 3176 Mahoning Drive West, shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday. The house was fully involved when firefighters arrived on the scene.
A fast-moving fire Saturday night completely destroyed a Mahoning Township home.
The fire was first reported just after 11 p.m. at the residence of Keith and Petra Rex, 3176 Mahoning Drive West.
The blaze could be seen for miles.
Township police, who were first to arrive on scene, warned firefighters of ammunition being set off by the inferno. Hundreds of rounds of ammo were heard going off to the west and rear portion of the home.
The house was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Wind swept flames sent burning embers into the air and surrounding areas of brush and woods.
The family managed to escape the flames after calling in the fire.
The mobile home reportedly was owned and occupied by the Rex family.
Responding to the scene were firefighters and apparatus from Mahoning Valley Fire Company, Bowmanstown, Lehighton, Franklin Township, Parryville, Jim Thorpe and East Penn Township.
Mahoning Valley Ambulance and local fire police also assisted at the scene.
Because the structure is in a rural area, portable reservoirs were set up by firefighters and filled by tankers who shuttled water to the scene.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
