Residents warned of phone scam

Published January 25. 2012 05:02PM

Lehighton police are warning area residents of a phone scam.

Police said a borough resident received a phone call from a male with a foreign accent using the name of Bobby Simmons and provided the person with a phone number.

The male told the person that they were the winner of $2 million and a new BMW car. However, to claim their winnings the person was told to go to the Wal-Mart store in Lehighton and use Western Union to wire him $1,125 and in return, the prizes would be given to them.

He further gave the person instructions to transfer the money and send it to Jamaica, West Indies.

Residents are strongly urged by police not to release any personal information should they experience such a phone call.
