No children were aboard a school bus when it crashed into a garage on SR54 in Nesquehoning just after 7 a.m. this morning.
The accident, which occurred near the intersections of Tonoli Road and Yard Street on Stock Street (SR54), occurred when the operator of a car, Kevin Webb of Lake Hauto, driving a blue 2004 Ford Escape SUV, lost control on the ice and drove head-on into a school bus driven by William Reed Jr. of Kistler Transportation in Lansford.
While driving east, Webb swerved to the right side of the road, striking a mailbox. He then re-entered SR54 and drove head-on into the school bus, which was traveling west on SR54.
The collision resulted in the school bus snapping a utility pole and then crashing into and leveling an encolosed garage located at 194 Stock Street.
This morning's foggy conditions prevented Medevac 4 from responding and Webb was taken to the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital in Lehighton via ambulance.
The bus driver, Reed, was seen walking around following the accident.
Responding were Nesquehoning Police, Nesquehoning Fire Company, New Columbus Fire Company, Nesquehoning Ambulance, Lehighton ALS and others. Emergency volunteers were seen sliding on the slick road.
Fire police volunteers directed traffic around the area and parts of SR54 while PennDOT laid salt. A heavy duty tow truck removed the bus.
Nesquehoning Police Officer Tim Wuttke is the investigating officer.
No other injuries were reported.
