Charged with fleeing from police officers

Published January 21. 2012 09:01AM

Terry Brant, 58, of 39 E. Ridge St., Lansford, faces charges from an incident which took place at 7:57 a.m. Jan. 12 on at Springgarden and Abbott streets in that borough.

Charges of fleeing and eluding, financial responsibility required, duty of driver on approach of emergency vehicle, and registration and certificate of title required were filed by Officer Robert Shubeck.

Brant was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek and jailed under $500 bail. According to an affidavit of probable cause:

Shubeck saw a brown Chevrolet Blazer traveling north on Springgarden Street. The Blazer was being driven by Brant, its owner. Shubeck had prior information that the Blazer was not insured and that Brant had been cited by other officers on Jan. 4.

As of Jan. 10, the Blazer was back on the street, and state Department of Transportation records showed the registration to be under suspension for lack of insurance.

Shubeck activated his lights on Route 902 (Springgarden Street). Just past the Water Street intersection, he activated the siren and followed the Blazer at about 40 mph. The driver swerved a little, but refused to stop or pull over.

Shubeck called for assistance from Summit Hill police and positively identified the driver as Brant.

Brant passed several areas where he could have safely pulled over, including Lehigh Street, the Batter's Box pub parking lot and Fell Street.

Brant finally stopped just before Union Street in Summit Hill, and was positively identified as Brant. He was arrested for eluding police, and could not produce a valid insurance document.

Shubeck attempted to contact the provided insurance company, but was unsuccessful. Brant then said he had coverage with other agencies, naming "Progressive" and "The General."

After waiving his Miranda rights, Brant gave a statement in which he said he saw the lights and heard the siren, but didn't know it was for him and didn't want to stop on the hill. He told Shubeck he was headed to a friend's house.
