Bruce Steigerwalt seated on Mahoning Twp. board
David Wargo/special to the times news Mahoning Township's new board of supervisors was seated at last night's reorganizational meeting. The supervisors this year are (front, left to right): Incoming supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt, Linda Benner, chairman John Wieczorek and secretary-treasurer Natalie Haggerty. (Standing left to right): Solicitor Tom Nanovic, Travis Steigerwalt and vice chairman Franklin Ruch.
Bruce Steigerwalt, a former township official, was welcomed to the Mahoning board of supervisors during the township's reorganizational meeting last Tuesday.
Steigerwalt had been previously appointed three years ago to fill the vacancy created when long-time secretary-treasurer and supervisor Dawn Blocker retired. At the time, he did not seek election to the office and his term ended with the election of Linda Benner and Franklin Ruch in 2009.
Last year, Steigerwalt, a past chairman, entered the supervisor's race and won the primary defeating former supervisor George Stawnyczyj whose term ended at the conclusion of 2011. He is currently serving on the township's planning commission.
By unanimous votes, John Wieczorek was reappointed chairman of the board and chief administrative officer of the township with Franklin Ruch being reappointed to the vice-chairman's position. Also, Natalie Haggerty was reappointed as secretary-treasurer of the township under the same terms and conditions as previous years.
Also reappointed to their positions in the township by unanimous votes were T&M Associates Tim Edinger as the township's engineer, Solicitor Tom Nanovic, Zoning Officer LeRoy Leibenguth, Sewage Enforcement Officer Scott Bieber and Alternate SEO William Brior. Patricia Snyder was reappointed to the Planning Commission for a four-year term. Kerry Verrastro was renamed as the township clerk and Carl Faust was reappointed as the Building Code Enforcement Official.
One point of dissension in the meeting came with the reappointment of the township's Emergency Management Coordinator when Supervisor Travis Steigerwalt moved to retain the EMA and the assistant. Stawnyczyj was the EMA and Debbie Binder was the assistant EMA.
His motion failed on a 2-3 vote with both Travis and Bruce Steigerwalt voting to retain the posts while Supervisors Wieczorek, Linda Benner and Ruch opposed the reappointment. When the original motion failed, Wieczorek moved to appoint Debbie Binder as the EMA and that motion carried unanimously.
No assistant was named.
