There was no pain at the pumps 12 years ago. The increase in the cost of living becomes apparent when examining this photo taken in Tamaqua in July, 1999. Gas was selling for $1.01 a gallon and a sign visible in the background shows that a pack of Marlboro cigarettes was $2.14, or $21.25 for a carton.
