4-H Reunion Committee looking for quilters to help celebrate centennial

Published February 27. 2012 05:02PM

Carbon County 4-H Reunion Committee is holding a quilting contest in conjunction with the centennial celebration. The contest is open to anyone in Carbon County, whether they were a 4-H member or not.

One square will be chosen to go on to Penn State University and a centennial quilt will be put together and auctioned at the 4-H Tailgate on Sept. 15.

The rest of the quilt squares will be put together and hopefully a quilt or wall hanging will be made and auctioned off at the 4-H reunion in the fall.

The quilt squares should meet the following guidelines:

1. Quilt squares should be made of prewashed cotton fabrics only.

2. The completed square should be 10 inches by 10 inches with a -inch allowance for putting the squares together.

The submitted block should measure 10.5 inches by 10.5 inches. (This means the prewashed square will measure 10.5 inches by 10.5 inches.)

3. The block may be patchwork, appliqué or a combination of both. If drawing or writing on the fabric, use permanent fabric markers only. Any writing design should not go into the -inch seam allowance.

4. The quilt squares should represent an historical or current event, program, or person of Pennsylvania 4-H.

Squares may represent county programming or events/activities at the state level.

They may represent the change in project areas over time or any other aspect that provides a rich story of Pennsylvania's 4-H history.

If there are any questions, please contact Georgia Farrow, 4-H program assistant at Penn State Extension, Carbon County office at (570) 325-2788 or email her at

The deadline to submit a quilt square is March 30.
