Assault incident at youth camp

Published February 24. 2012 05:01PM

State police at Lehighton reported the arrest of a client at the Youth Services Camp Adams in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County, for assaulting a staff member at the facility.

Troopers said Maurice Jamal Hampton, 20, of Philadelphia, has been charged with aggravated and simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.

He was arraigned before District Judge Edward Lewis, of Jim Thorpe, and committed to the county prison in Nesquehoning in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Troopers said the incident occurred about 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, when Hampton entered the nurses' office at the camp without permission and refused to leave.

One of the staff members attempted to remove Hampton from the area and a struggle ensued. During the struggle another staff member, David William Conway, 27, of Nesquehoning, came to the aid of the first staff member.

Conway assisted in pushing Hampton out of the area when the suspect "bull rushed" him out through the entry door.

Hampton then slammed Conway into a stair railing and then punched him in the face.

Troopers did not indicate if Conway required medical attention.
