An arrest had been made in an arson fire that occurred in Schuylkill County.

State police at Frackville said David M. Berk, 19, of Auburn, has been charged with setting a fire that destroyed a garage at 434 Market St., in Auburn. The fire occurred about midnight on Feb. 2, troopers said. The garage was owned by Douglas Naftzinger and rented by Harold Miller, both of Auburn. An adjacent shed, owned by Jeffrey Webber, was also damaged.

Troopers said Berk confessed to setting the fire. Berk is a member of the Auburn Fire Company. He was arraigned by video by District Judge David A. Plachko, of Port Carbon, and committed to the county prison in Pottsville in lieu of $100,000 straight cash bail.

Troopers continue to investigate a second arson fire that occurred in Auburn. That fire was discovered about 11:25 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, on the back porch at 412 Washington St. Firefighters were able to confine the damage to the porch. The home is presently unoccupied and was the home of the late Roxanne Katz.
