Kindergarten registration

Registration for kindergarten classes, in the Tamaqua Area School District, for the 2012-2013 school year, will be held March 12, 13 and 14 at the Rush Elementary School and on March 15 at the West Penn Elementary School.

Registration hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration packets will be available at all three of the district's elementary schools, beginning Feb. 27, or at the Tamaqua Area School District website at Appointments will then be scheduled for March.

Children residing within the Tamaqua Area School District who will reach the age of 5 before Sept. 1, 2012 are eligible to attend kindergarten classes.

To register, call (570) 668-3306 the week of Feb. 27, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., and from 1-3 p.m. to schedule an appointment.

Proof of residency, health records, original birth certificates and original Social Security cards will be required.

Children will be evaluated by a classroom teacher, nurse and speech therapist.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Feb. 9 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 74 members in attendance. Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business meeting and provided her weekly report.

Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Whispers." A report was also offered by secretary Joan Anne Garber.

Eleanor Roberts, Jayne Myers and Rosetta Folk were added to the sick list.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.


The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet Thursday, at 7 p.m., at the South Ward Community Center, located at the South Ward Playground. Plans for the upcoming year will be discussed.

Anyone interested in improving the South Ward is welcome to attend.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Tamaqua Youth Ministry will meet at 11:45 a.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, Women of the Old Testament group meets at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare will be held at 6:30 p.m. and The Story group will meet at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, the Jesus' Final Week group will meet at 1 p.m., Men's Fraternity will meet at 6:30 p.m. and the Forgiveness group will meet at 7 p.m.; Friday, the group Courageous for Men and Women will meet at 7 p.m.; Saturday, TYM hoagie sale at 8 a.m., musician rehearsal at 9 a.m., Praise practice at 9:30 a.m.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes will meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the church board will meet at 10:45 a.m., Confirmation class will meet at 1 p.m.; Cub Scout committee meets at 5 p.m., Cub Scouts meet at 6 p.m., Daisies and Brownies will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, Women's Association of St. Peter's will meet at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Ash Wednesday service at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., senior choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, youth group meets at 4 p.m.
