Coaldale man charged with 2 driving counts

Chad Edward Zeigler, 21, of 123 East Phillips Street, Coaldale, was charged by borough police with two counts of driving under the influence and failing to drive within traffic lanes.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Officer Joseph Krebs was on duty at 2:51 a.m. Jan. 29 and monitoring traffic on Route 2909 in the area of the No. 11 hill when he saw a red Dodge Stratus traveling east. the car crossed the double yellow line five times and over the white fog line twice.

Krebs activated his emergency lights and stopped the car. He approached the driver, identified as Zeigler, and smelled a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Zeigler's speech was slurred and his eyes red and glassy.

Zeigler agreed to perform field sobriety tests. The results indicated Zeigler was impaired. He was arrested and taken to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in the borough for a blood-alcohol test.

Zeigler's blood alcohol content was 0.21 percent. The threshold for drunken driving is 0.08 percent, according to law.
