Heavy snow and strong and gusty winds made for a winter wonderland. In Summit Hill, 25.5 inches of snow fell, while Lansford had 23 inches, Jim Thorpe measured 20 inches, Lehighton had 18 inches, and in Tamaqua there were 16 inches reported. Winds gusted as high as 30 miles per hour, said the National Weather Service. The storm was so severe that Interstate 81 was shut down from the Maryland state line to I-80. The Schuylkill Expressway and parts of the Northeast Extension of the Pa. Turnpike also had to shut down.
