More nursing care made available at Carbon prison

Published February 09. 2012 05:01PM

Carbon County is making sure they have more nurses available at the prison.

During special county salary board and prison board meetings on Wednesday, the boards established a temporary full-time LPN position at the prison and then hired a nurse to fill the position.

The salary board voted unanimously on establishing the position at the AFSCME Union prevailing rate, effective Feb. 8. The prison board, then voted in favor of changing the status of Judith A. Veron, who recently graduated from nursing school, to temporary full-time LPN, effective Feb. 14.

The reason for the added LPN was due to nursing staff being out on medical leave or because of appointments.

Warden Joseph Gross said the extra position will be an added benefit to help alleviate shortages when they occur.

Gross asked if the position could be made permanent, but Robert Crampsie, chairman of the prison board, said the position established at the salary board meeting did not have a termination date, so Gross would be able to utilize Veron when he needed her.
