A Christmas tragedy
ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS This Mahanoy City apartment is where a 37-year-old man apparently shot and killed his wife Christmas morning, before turning the gun on himself.
A Schuylkill County couple is dead following an apparent murder-suicide on Christmas day in Mahanoy City.
Lt. John Kaczmarczyk, the investigating officer, said the bodies of Richard C. Weikel, 37, and Stephanie L. Weikel, 28, were discovered in their apartment after officers were dispatched to 3 N. 10th Street around 1:20 a.m. yesterday.
Mahanoy City Police Chief Mark Wiekrykas said that Richard Weikel's ex-wife, who resides in another community, called police after Richard admitted to the murder.
Weikrykas added, "He told her he just killed his current wife and said he couldn't spend the rest of his life in jail."
Kaczmarczyk stated that he and Patrolman Charles Kovalewski arrived within minutes to find the couple deceased.
Both were pronounced dead at 2:17 a.m. by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky of Mahanoy City.
Police added that the couple was found inside the kitchen area of the apartment, along with three weapons, a handgun and two long rifles, that were also recovered from the apartment.
Detectives from the Schuylkill County District Attorney's Office were also called in to assist in the investigation.
Their combined investigation determined that Richard shot Stephanie and then turned the gun on himself.
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the Christmas day shooting.
They added that the investigation is still underway.
