Crash, fire close NE extension of turnpike

Published December 22. 2012 09:02AM

A tractor-trailer fire and a fatal accident, several miles apart but going on simultaneously, last night closed the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between the Mahoning Valley and Lehigh Valley exits.

The tractor-trailer fire happened first at about 7 p.m. about a mile north of the tunnel.

The Bowmanstown and Parryville Fire Departments were dispatched. Reportedly the vehicle was fully involved in fire when the firefighters reached the scene.

As the firefighters battled the blaze, an accident occurred just south of the tunnel.

Reports were that the Lehigh County coroner was called to the scene.

It was reported the crash had fire involvement.

No other details were available.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed because of the incidents.
