A Slatington man was sentenced to 30-64 years in prison for raping an elderly North Whitehall woman in 2008.

John Anthony Vega, 29, faces charges for similar crimes in Carbon and Northampton counties. In Carbon County, he faces charges of attempted forceable rape, burglary and indecent assault stemming from an Oct. 21, 2007 incident, and attempted rape and burglary charges from a May 31, 2008 incident, according to court documents. Both incidents involved the same 78-year-old woman, a widow, in her Lower Towamensing Township home.

On Monday, Lehigh County Court Judge Robert L. Steinberg sentenced Vega to the lengthy prison term for his home invasion rape of the 77 year-old North Whitehall woman. According to court documents, Vega hid inside the woman's home while she walked her dog on the morning of Nov. 9, 2008, attacking her when she returned.

He was convicted of aggravated assault, aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, attempted rape and burglary. His victim suffered severe injuries that required surgeries and a lengthy rehabilitation.
