Wal-Mart collecting coats, toys for Salvation Army

Published December 07. 2012 05:04PM

This Saturday, shoppers at both the Hometown and Lehighton Wal-Mart can add a few items to their cart for a good cause. Wal-Mart has teamed up with the Tamaqua Salvation Army to collect toys and coats for children in a new event.

The "Fill the Truck" toy and coat drive will begin at 9 a.m. and run to 5 p.m. Salvation Army volunteers will be handing out Angel Tree slips with suggested gifts shoppers can buy inside the store. Shoppers then bring their purchased items to the collection bins at the store. Once the collection vehicles are full, the toys will be taken to the Tamaqua Salvation Army to be distributed to local children.

Donated items don't have to be purchased at Wal-Mart.

This is a new event for the region explained Tamaqua Salvation Army Major Sharon Whispell.

The Salvation Army is still looking for volunteers to help with this event. Interested parties should call (570) 668-0410 or (570) 668-1234.
