Gabriel Youth Orchestra to perform in Pottsville

Published December 07. 2012 05:04PM

On Sunday, December 16 at 3 p.m., the Gabriel Youth Orchestra, under the direction of John F. Potlunas, will perform their Holiday concert at the D.H.H. Lengel Auditorium in the Pottsville Middle School.

The program includes a wide variety of works: Christmas Festival by Anderson, German Carol Festival by Christensen, It's Christmastime arranged by Custer, but also James Bond Medley, selections from Les Miserables, Radetsky March by Strauss, and A Salute to the Big Apple arranged by Custer.

The Gabriel Youth Orchestra was established in 2010 under the auspices of the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble. It provides an opportunity for high school students from throughout the region to play in a professionally managed setting. The Gabriel Youth Orchestra is the only available outlet for young musicians to assemble in full orchestral mode, with the string instruments differentiating the ensemble from the many "bands" that exist at the high school level and in the community.

The Gabriel Youth Orchestra is funded by the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble non-profit organization, by ticket and advertising revenues as well as individual, corporate and foundation support, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Schuylkill Area Community Foundation and other grants.
