Driver falls asleep, crashes on I-81

A Lackawanna County driver fell asleep at the wheel of his truck early Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, and crashed along Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Frackville said Frank Politz III, of Scranton, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado southbound about 3:40 a.m. when he fell asleep.

The truck went onto the east berm and struck the metal guide rail with the front end.

After impact the truck continued about 50 feet, spun clockwise and came to rest down a slight embankment in the center median facing west.

Politz was not injured, but the truck had to be towed from the scene.

Troopers cited Politz for careless driving.
