Bernice Snyder, a resident at Mahoning Valley Nursing and Retirement Center, turned 100 years old on Dec. 3, 2012.

She celebrated the event with a huge birthday party with 55 members of her family at the City View Dinner in Whitehall on Saturday.

Nearly every grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild attended the festive event. There are 58 people in her extended family.

Bernice was born in Nesquehoning, which is where she also grew up. She was married to Kenneth Snyder. He passed away in 1966.

She and her husband, raised two sons, Ken and Eugene. She has 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She attended Lehigh Community College and studied real estate. She also was a teacher's aide for the Intermediate Unit 21 and was on the Redevelopment Board of Carbon County.

Bernice said she loves to travel and often visited Cornwall, England, where her great-grandparents had lived.

She also visited Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Alaska, the Midwest, Canada, Mexico, and had gone on Caribbean cruises.

She loves to play pinochle, "and I love to win," she added with a laugh.

She also has a sweet tooth.

"She would rather have a banana split any day for dinner than anything else," said her daughter-in-law, Ivory.

"The banana splits from the 443 Diner are really good," said Bernice.

Bernice also participated with JOY from the Eastern Star and was active in the Meeds Methodist Church circles, where she used to make shoofly pies and quilts to raise money for the church.
