District reaches out to one of its own

In the wake of a tragedy, Northern Lehigh School District has set out to take care of one of its own.

Sherri Molitoris, co-director of business affairs/human resources, told the school board on Monday that donations are being collected for the Krum family, which last week lost their son, Gavin Lee Krum.

Gavin, 14, of Lehighton, was the son of David and Lora Krum. Lora is a vocal instructor at Peters Elementary.

An eighth grade student at Lehighton Area Middle School, Gavin lost his battle of fighting complications brought about from his recently diagnosed leukemia.

Molitoris noted this is the second child Lora has lost in the past two years. Her other son, Dylan, died in 2010.

In an unrelated matter, Molitoris announced that a fundraiser will be held for Angela Shoemaker, a learning support aide at the high school.

The fundraiser will be held at Valley Pizza for Shoemaker, who is currently battling a disease in the hospital, Molitoris said.

Also on Monday, Superintendent Michael Michaels defended the board's decision to spend $770,000 for the turf field in the Bulldog Athletic Stadium.

In August, the district held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the dedication of the turf field, which boasts an artificial surface, scoreboard, and security camera system.

Michaels said the district had no choice to remodel the stadium after referees complained of the field's poor condition.

Also as part of his report, Michaels announced the district's administration and central office staff secretaries donated $875 in accessories.

In other business, the board:
