N.J. cyclist injured in Schuylkill crash

A New Jersey motorcyclist was injured in a one-vehicle crash about 2:25 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, along Bethel Road, in Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Joseph L. McKelvey Jr., 37, of Egg Harbor Township, was driving a 2000 Honda CBR600 northbound and attempting to negotiate a right-hand curve when his bike began to travel off the road and onto the shoulder.

After striking a concrete block that the guide rail was attached to, McKelvey and the bike flipped into the air and landed about 80 feet down an embankment. He was able to climb back up the embankment and lie down on the shoulder of the road.

He was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he is listed in stable condition. Troopers cited McKelvey for driving on roadways laned for traffic.

Foster Twp. crash

Troopers also investigated a crash about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday along SR901 in Foster Township. Troopers said Joseph F. Smith, 63, of Ashland, was driving a 2007 Ford Focus westbound when he failed to negotiate a left curve. The car traveled through the curve and onto the north berm where the front passenger side struck a parked 2010 Kia Forte on the front driver's side.

Smith was not injured. Troopers cited Smith for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
