Cody Wentz Awareness Benefit to be held Saturday in Weissport
Family members and friends will be taking part in the second annual Cody Wentz Awareness Benefit in Weissport at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. The event is coordinated by Cody's mom, Lisa Shiffert, to bring awareness to the growing drug problem in the Lehighton area. The event is being sponsored by the Beltzville Lions Club.
Last year's event raised approximately $3,000 and the proceeds from the event were donated to the Lehighton High School drug program in memory of her son, Cody Wentz, who died from an overdose of drugs on Nov. 29, 2010. He was 19 years old.
The event will begin with a walk along the canal in the morning and then will progress to the Weissport Park where the band, Rehab, will perform. There will also be a Chinese auction, bake sale, food and a raffle.
Shiffert said that she held the event to bring attention to the drug problem. Shiffert said that family and friends continue mourning his death.
Shiffert had a hard time accepting his death. She had thought that he was happy and loved life.
Shiffert made the event an annual event because the problem with drugs is worst than anyone realizes in the area.
