Carbon driver in Lehigh crash

A Carbon County driver was cited after being involved in a rear-end type crash in Lehigh County. State police at Fogelsville said the crash occurred about 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, along Chestnut St., near Batman Road, in Upper Milford Township.

Troopers said James M. Amplo, 66, of Pottstown, driving a 2000 Ford Econoline E250 van and was stopped for traffic in front of him when his vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2000 Freightliner tractor driven by John J. Kovatch, 28, of Nesquehoning. Upon impact the Ford was pushed off the west berm about 30 feet into the woods and up an embankment.

Amplo and his passenger, Stephen R. Girard, 26, of Blue Bell, each sustained minor injuries but did not require immediate medical attention.

Kovatch and his passenger, Trajan S. Koerbler, 27, of Nesquehoning, were not injured.

Troopers cited Kovatch for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.
