Girls soccer team hoping to play at high school stadium
Members of the Jim Thorpe Area High School girls soccer team are hoping to be able to return to the high school stadium for their games.
When the Jim Thorpe Area School Board met this week, members of the team approached the board to discuss where they have been playing their games.
The team used to play on the stadium field until the field needed to be renovated. The girls currently play on another field and they asked if they can play their games on the stadium field again.
A member of the team said that by having the ability to play under the stadium lights, they have the opportunity for more night games and more chances for family, students, residents, etc., being able to attend.
Board director Pearl Downs-Sheckler said that the field was fixed and reconditioned, but it is not brand new.
"We voted for this year just to play the five games on it, see how it withstood," said Sheckler. "Then to revote next year to put soccer, to put everyone back on it. We don't want to be in the same situation we were in where everything has to be away."
Board director Randall Smith suggested that maybe the stadium could be available for a match or two. The board had discussed doing this.
Business manager and board secretary, Lauren Kovac, said that the engineer who worked on the field recommended that they limit the games to just football. Until the grass is rooted, playing multiple sports can damage the field. It was recommended to wait and see how the field holds up.
The team also asked about changing some of the weekend game times to make the games later in the day on Saturday. The board will talk with athletic director Dustin McAndrew about game scheduling.
The field renovations were financed by grant money and partially by a bond refinance.
