Published August 15. 2012 05:02PM

A driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed in Carbon County. The accident was one of two reported by state police at Lehighton.

Troopers said Spencer L. Shigo, 17, of Palmerton, was driving a 2005 Acura MDX westbound on Fireline Road, in Lower Towamensing Township, near Quarry Road, about 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, when he fell asleep, which caused him to lose control. The car crashed head-on into a tree in the area of 3809 Fireline Road.

Shigo was taken to the Palmerton hospital to be checked out, troopers said. The vehicle was towed from the scene. Shigo was cited for careless driving.

A crash was reported about 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 10 along SR335 in Ross Township, Monroe County. Troopers said Michael A. Breland, 17, of Effort, was driving a 2008 Chrysler Sebring when he attempted to negotiate a left curve in the road. Breland, troopers said, was traveling too fast for conditions and lost control of the car, which left the road and struck an embankment, then rolled over.

Breland and his passenger, Caleb S. Knudsen, 17, of Saylorsburg, were not injured.

Troopers cited Breland for driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed.
