A Tamaqua man died Sunday of injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday.
Nicholas W. Zeigler, 21, of 317 Pine St., was pronounced dead at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, at 12:36 p.m. by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Eric Minnich. He died of blunt force trauma, Minnich ruled.
Zeigler was involved in a crash about 11:54 a.m. on Saturday along Catawissa Road, about 100 feet south of Valley Road, in Walker Township.
State police at Frackville said Zeigler was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier northbound at a high rate of speed when the vehicle skidded into the oncoming lane causing him to lose control.
The car went off the road and into a grass field where it struck a PPL utility pole with its left front bumper. As a result of the impact the driver's side door was ripped off causing Zeigler to be ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, troopers noted.
The vehicle came to rest in the grass facing east.
Zeigler was flown to LVH by Medevac helicopter. The car sustained major damages, troopers said.
Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the Walker Township and New Ringgold fire companies, as well as Tamaqua ambulance, Tamaqua Rescue Squad and fire police.
