Rt. 248 crash injures two

Two men were seriously injured late Wednesday afternoon when involved in a grinding head-on crash along SR248 (Lehigh Drive) in Lehigh Township, Northampton County. The crash occurred about 4:20 p.m. and a half mile east of Locust Drive. Police said a car operated by Tyrone Johnson, 37, of Lehigh Township, was westbound when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided into a pickup truck driven by Aaron Krause, 29, of Pennsville, Lehigh Township. Passing motorists freed Krause from the truck, which had fire showing in the front end. Other motorists extinguished the fire, police said. Johnson was knocked unconscious and also helped from his car by other motorists. Both were flown by PennStar helicopter to St. Luke' Hospital, Fountain Hill. The road was closed for a time until police investigated and the wreckage cleared. This is the second head-on crash in which Johnson was involved. On Feb. 14 his vehicle collided into a car driven by Gregory Tobin, of Jim Thorpe, who was flown to St. Luke's Hospital, while his passenger, Jeremy Tobin, also of Jim Thorpe, was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's. Johnson was later charged with drunk driving an related counts. Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call them at 610-760-8800.
