A Carbon County crash involved a state police cruiser being struck. State police at Lehighton said the accident occurred about 7:15 p.m. on April 19 along SR248 eastbound in Bowmanstown.

Troopers said Noema Kaercher, 74, of Harleysville, Montgomery County, was operating a 1999 Chrysler Cirrus westbound in the eastbound lane when she struck a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser driven by Trooper Michael Sofranko. Troopers said Kaercher was unresponsive to the emergency lights and siren of the cruiser. After impact Sofranko attempted to catch up to the Chrysler and observed the driver to be unconscious or asleep at the wheel.

Sofranko managed to pull in front of the Chrysler and attempted to slow it down and stop it. Eventually Sofranko got the Chrysler to stop.

No injuries were reported and the Chrysler was towed from the scene.

The investigation into the incident is continuing troopers said, but did not note if any charges are pending.
