Schuylkill voters to be asked to show photo ID

Published April 17. 2012 05:01PM

Voters entering their Schuylkill County polling places in next Tuesday's primary election will be asked to show a photo identification card and, although it is not mandatory for the primary election, it is a dress rehearsal for the fall general election when it will be mandated, it was announced by Election Director Frannie Brennan.

Accepted IDs will be photo IDs issued by the federal or state governments which include a state driver's license or non-driver's license photo ID, a valid U.S. passport, a U.S. military ID, an employee photo ID issued by the federal, state, county or municipal governments, a photo ID from a public or private institution of higher learning and photo ID cards issued by a care facility.

Brennan said those who don't have an ID card will be given hand fliers which will show what type of ID is needed. The new state law makes it mandatory to have an ID card when going to vote in November's general election. Those who don't have an ID will be given a provisional ballot to cast their vote but must produce an ID card in six days to have their vote count.

All photo IDs must be current and contain an expiration date. Pennsylvania driver's license or non-driver's license photo ID are valid for voting purpose 12 months past expiration date. A valid U.S. passport must not be expired. U.S. military IDs, active duty and retired military (a military or veteran's ID must designate an expiration date or designate that the expiration date is indefinite). Military dependents IDs must contain an expiration date.

Employee photo ID must not have expired. Photo ID cards from accredited public or private Pennsylvania colleges or universities must not have expired.
