Requests for gun permits passes the 1,000 mark
The number of applications for gun permits processed by the office of Sheriff Joseph G. Groody at the Schuylkill County courthouse this year passed the 1,000 mark.
Last Saturday Groody ordered his office open during the morning hours, as the courthouse is closed on Saturdays, in order to allow those seeking a gun permit to be able to come to his office to fill out and file their applications. A total of 131 people came in, many of them women, who submitted applications.
The applications are reviewed to make sure the applicant has no criminal record. Groody said 98 percent are approved.
He also announced he plans to open his office after hours periodically, however, the next opening will probably be in the evening when security people are on duty because of meetings held in the courthouse. Security guards were called out specially on Saturday.
