ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS Firefighters had to cut the roof and door off the vehicle to extricate the female driver from the small car.
Traffic was at a standstill on SR309 just after 3:30 p.m. yesterday after a small car and a green house box truck collided on top of the Mile Hill Road in Kline Township. The female driver of a red Chevrolet sedan, Beth Valentine, the only person in the car, was taken via helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for unknown injuries. Both vehicles came to rest in the center of the northbound lanes at the intersection with Lofty Road. Rescuers had to cut the roof and doors off the sedan with hydraulic equipment to extricate Valentine. The driver of the truck, Jeff Witkowski of McAdoo, operated by van Hoekelen Greenhouses, was taken via ambulance to Hazleton General Hospital. All four lanes were shutdown while emergency crews loaded Valentine into helicopter, which landed on the southbound lanes. Responding were Rush and Kline Township police, McAdoo firefighters, Hazle Township Fire and Rescue, McAoo Ambulance and others. Fire police controlled traffic during the accident. The conditions of Valentine and Witkowski and cause of the accident were unknown as of press time. Township police officer Jim Patterson is investigating.
