Walnutport Canal Association cleanup day

The Walnutport Canal Association's annual canal cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, beginning at 8 a.m.

It will include a litter patrol over the entire 4 1/2-mile stretch of canal and also maintenance projects such as pruning trees, fixing benches, and so forth.

Persons interested in helping should meet at the pavilion and wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Everyone is welcome to help, not just WCA members.

Helping with the cleanup is a great way for high school students to earn a few hours toward their graduation requirement.

Thrivent Financial will supply coffee, doughnuts and lunch.

The 2012 Canal Festival will be held on Sunday, Oct. 21 from noon to 6 p.m., with a rain date of Oct. 28.

This year, the festival would like to have more demonstrations and displays related to history, transportation and nature. Organizers are looking for groups or individuals with historic or unique collections, local memorabilia or who can demonstrate a historic craft. Those willing to participate, or know of someone, should call Greg at (610) 760-9906.

Areas to be cleaned will be borough owned and operated recreation facilities, and will include the West End Playground, Victory Park, Slatington Trailhead, and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead west to the borough line.

The commission is looking for local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and area civic organizations to assist in the cleanup.

Staging for the cleanup will be held at the Slatington Borough Garage on West Church Street.

Those who wish to participate may call Robert at (610) 554-4099, or Slatington Borough Hall at (610) 767-2131.

Light lunch and refreshments will be provided to all participants at the conclusion of the cleanup. The rain date is Saturday, April 28.
